Membranesare is a term encountered in some educational resources and online discussions as a stylized reference to biological membranes and their roles in cells. It is not an established formal term in standard biology literature, but it is sometimes used as a mnemonic or branding for topics related to membranes.

Biological membranes are primarily composed of lipid bilayers with embedded and associated proteins. The bilayer consists of amphiphilic phospholipids that form a hydrophobic interior and hydrophilic surfaces. The fluid mosaic model describes the membrane as a dynamic, two-dimensional solution where lipids and proteins diffuse laterally. Cholesterol modulates fluidity in animal membranes, and carbohydrates on the extracellular side contribute to cell recognition.

Key functions include creating protected compartments, regulating the movement of substances into and out of cells and organelles, transmitting signals, and hosting reactions such as energy conversion in mitochondria and chloroplasts. Membranes also participate in vesicular transport, endocytosis and exocytosis, and in cell–cell communication through receptor–ligand interactions and adhesion molecules.

Major membrane types include the plasma membrane surrounding the cell and internal membranes that enclose organelles such as the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, and chloroplasts. While they share a common architecture, the specific lipid and protein compositions tailor their functions to each compartment.

In research and biotechnology, membrane biology informs drug delivery, with liposomes and other vesicles used to transport therapeutics, and underpins the development of sensors and synthetic biology approaches that mimic natural membranes.
