Membrandiaphragmakompressorer, commonly referred to in English as membrane or diaphragm compressors, are a type of positive-displacement gas compressor that uses a flexible membrane as the moving boundary of the compression chamber. The diaphragm is actuated by a drive mechanism—typically mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic—causing the gas-side volume to shrink and the pressure to rise. The gas being compressed remains separated from the drive system by the diaphragm, enabling oil-free and contamination-free operation.

Most designs employ either a single diaphragm or a double-diaphragm arrangement for safety. In double-diaphragm units, a second diaphragm provides a secondary barrier in case of outer-diaphragm failure. Some models are hermetically sealed, with the drive and compression sides isolated from the gas stream. Diaphragms may be made from elastomeric polymers such as NBR, EPDM, or FKM, or from metal for higher chemical resistance. The choice depends on the process gas compatibility, temperature, and pressure requirements. The drive system can be powered by compressed air, hydraulic fluid, or an electric actuator, and some miniature units use electro-pneumatic control.

Advantages of membrane/diaphragm compressors include oil-free compression, high gas purity, compact size, low vibration and noise, and suitability for corrosive, toxic, or high-purity gases. Limitations include relatively modest flow rates and discharge pressures compared with other compressor types, finite diaphragm life, and the need for regular inspection and replacement to prevent leaks. Common applications are in semiconductor manufacturing, analytical instrumentation, laboratory gas supplies, medical gas systems, and processes requiring clean, chemically compatible gas compression or vacuum generation.
