Membraanivedeliku, also known as membrane fluid or interstitial fluid, refers to the liquid environment surrounding cells in multicellular organisms. It is a crucial component of the extracellular matrix, filling the spaces between cells and facilitating the exchange of nutrients, gases, and waste products. This fluid is derived from blood plasma that filters out of capillaries into the interstitial spaces.

The composition of membraanivedeliku is similar to plasma but with a lower concentration of large proteins, as most proteins are retained within the blood vessels. It primarily consists of water, electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and chloride ions, as well as small molecules like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids. Waste products from cellular metabolism, such as carbon dioxide and urea, are also present in the membraanivedeliku before being transported away by the lymphatic system or returning to the bloodstream.

Membraanivedeliku plays a vital role in maintaining the internal environment, or homeostasis, of the body. It acts as a medium for cell-to-cell communication and transport, allowing cells to receive essential substances and eliminate metabolic byproducts. Disruptions in the balance of membraanivedeliku, such as edema (swelling caused by excess fluid accumulation), can indicate underlying medical conditions and affect normal physiological processes. The lymphatic system is responsible for collecting excess membraanivedeliku and returning it to the circulatory system, thus preventing its buildup.
