mellomvariant

Mellomvariant is a non-technical Norwegian term used to describe an intermediate or transitional variant, i.e., something that lies between two established states or lineages. The word combines mellom- meaning “between” with variant, and is commonly used in everyday science communication more than in formal nomenclature.

Usage and scope vary by field. In general discussion, mellomvariant denotes an allele, form, or version that does not fit neatly into a single category. In genetics and population biology, it may be used informally to refer to a genetic state with intermediate effects or characteristics between two well-defined variants, particularly when the distinction is not sharply defined. In linguistics or dialectology, it can describe features that blend aspects of neighboring linguistic varieties. In evolutionary biology or paleontology, the term may appear to describe transitional forms, though the standard terminology is transitional form or intermediary form. In virology or epidemiology, writers sometimes use mellomvariant to describe lineage segments that bridge known lineages, again with the caveat that this is informal usage.

Limitations and caveats. Mellomvariant is not a formal scientific category and has no universal, precise definition. Its meaning is context-dependent and can lead to ambiguity.
