mellombredde

Mellombredde is a term used in Norwegian and other Scandinavian technical vocabularies to denote the width of an object measured at its midsection along its longitudinal axis. The word combines mellom ("between" or "mid") with bredde ("breadth" or "width"). In practice, mellombredde refers to the distance between opposite boundaries of a body at the mid-length plane, i.e., the width of the cross-section taken at the center of the object.

To determine mellombredde, a measurement is taken at the central longitudinal plane at the location corresponding to half the object's length, with the measurement oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. This dimension can differ from the overall width or maximum breadth when the form is tapered, curved, or asymmetric. In design and analysis, mellombredde is used alongside other dimensions such as length, total breadth, draft or depth, and height to describe the geometry and to inform structural integrity, stability, or aesthetics.

Applications include shipbuilding—where mellombredde helps define hull shape and stability—architecture and bridge or beam design, and product design for elongated objects where midsection proportions matter.
