Melanocratic refers to a characteristic of igneous rocks that are rich in dark-colored minerals, particularly mafic minerals such as pyroxene, amphibole, and olivine. These minerals contain significant amounts of iron and magnesium, which give them a darker hue compared to lighter silicates like quartz or feldspar. The term originates from the Greek words *melas*, meaning "black," and *kratos*, meaning "strength" or "power," reflecting the prominence of dark minerals in the rock's composition.
