"Meessuguhormoonide" is the Estonian term for male sex hormones, also known as androgens. The primary and most well-known androgen is testosterone, but others like androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) are also produced. These hormones are crucial for the development and maintenance of male reproductive tissues and secondary sexual characteristics.

In males, androgens are predominantly produced by the testes, specifically by the Leydig cells. A smaller amount is also produced by the adrenal glands. The production of androgens is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). LH, in turn, signals the Leydig cells to produce testosterone.

Testosterone plays a vital role in puberty, leading to the growth of the penis and testes, the development of facial and body hair, deepening of the voice, and increased muscle mass and bone density. Throughout adulthood, androgens are essential for maintaining libido, sperm production, and overall physical and psychological well-being in men. While primarily associated with males, small amounts of androgens are also present and play roles in females, contributing to bone health, libido, and muscle mass.
