Medeltidssamhället refers to the social structure and organization of European societies during the Middle Ages, broadly spanning from the fall of the Western Roman Empire around the 5th century to the beginning of the Renaissance in the 15th century. This period was characterized by a hierarchical system, often described as feudalism, where land ownership and loyalty formed the basis of power.

At the apex of this society was the monarch, who theoretically owned all the land and granted it to nobles in exchange for military service and allegiance. These nobles, in turn, held authority over lesser lords and knights, creating a complex web of reciprocal obligations. The vast majority of the population consisted of peasants, who worked the land owned by the nobility. Peasants were largely tied to the land, known as serfs, and owed a portion of their labor and produce to their lord.

The Church played a profoundly influential role in medieval society, shaping spiritual life, education, and even political affairs. Clergy members held significant status and wielded considerable moral and temporal power. Society was divided into distinct estates, often simplified as those who pray (clergy), those who fight (nobility), and those who work (peasants). While there were some merchants and artisans, particularly in growing towns, their influence was generally less than that of the landowning classes. Social mobility was limited, with one's birth largely determining their position in life, though exceptions did occur. This structured, agrarian-based society laid the groundwork for many of the institutions and cultural developments of later European history.
