Mechanoreception refers to the sensory detection of mechanical stimuli. In vertebrates, these stimuli include pressure, vibration, stretch, and touch. Specialized sensory cells called mechanoreceptors are responsible for transducing these physical forces into electrochemical signals that the nervous system can interpret. These receptors are found throughout the body, playing vital roles in everything from skin sensation to internal organ function.

In the skin, mechanoreceptors are organized into distinct types, each sensitive to different aspects of touch. For example, Meissner's corpuscles are sensitive to light touch and flutter, while Pacinian corpuscles respond to deep pressure and high-frequency vibration. Merkel cells are attuned to sustained pressure and fine details, and Ruffini endings detect stretch and sustained pressure. These receptors allow us to perceive the texture of objects, the force of our grip, and the presence of external objects on our skin.

Beyond the skin, mechanoreceptors are also crucial for proprioception, our sense of body position and movement. Muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs provide information about muscle length and tension, respectively, enabling coordinated movement and balance. Within internal organs, mechanoreceptors monitor stretch and pressure, contributing to the regulation of blood pressure, digestion, and bladder fullness. The auditory system also relies on mechanoreception, with hair cells in the inner ear converting sound wave vibrations into neural signals.
