Maximákát is a term primarily used in the context of game theory and economics to describe a decision-making strategy where an agent aims to maximize their minimum possible outcome. This approach is also known as a maximin strategy. It is a conservative or risk-averse approach, as it prioritizes avoiding the worst-case scenario over pursuing potentially higher gains that might also come with a risk of significant loss.

In practice, a maximákát player identifies all possible outcomes for each available strategy. For each strategy, they then determine the worst possible outcome. Finally, they choose the strategy that yields the highest of these worst-case outcomes. This ensures that regardless of what other players do, the maximákát player will achieve at least this guaranteed minimum payoff.

The maximákát strategy is particularly relevant in situations involving uncertainty and potential adversarial interactions, such as zero-sum games or negotiations where trust is low. It provides a baseline of security for the decision-maker. However, it can sometimes lead to suboptimal results if the worst-case scenario is highly unlikely or if there are opportunities for much greater rewards that are forgone due to the conservative nature of the strategy. The opposite approach is often referred to as minimax, which seeks to minimize the maximum possible loss.
