Maxillärbihålorna, also known as maxillary sinuses, are the largest of the paranasal sinuses. They are a pair of air-filled cavities located within the maxillary bones of the face, beneath the cheekbones. These sinuses are pyramidal in shape and communicate with the nasal cavity through small openings called ostia, which are typically located in the medial wall of the sinus.

The lining of the maxillary sinuses, like other paranasal sinuses, is composed of a thin mucous membrane called respiratory epithelium. This membrane contains ciliated cells that help to move mucus towards the ostia, allowing for drainage into the nasal cavity. This constant drainage is crucial for maintaining sinus health and preventing infection.

The maxillary sinuses play a role in humidifying inhaled air and reducing the weight of the skull. They also contribute to voice resonance. The roots of the upper teeth are closely related to the floor of the maxillary sinuses, and dental infections can sometimes spread to the sinuses, leading to sinusitis. Inflammation of these sinuses is a common condition known as maxillary sinusitis or maxillary sinusitis. This inflammation can be caused by infections, allergies, or anatomical obstructions.
