Matkapuhelinverkko, or mobile network, refers to a telecommunications network that allows mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, to communicate with each other and with the wider internet. These networks are designed to provide wireless connectivity over a geographical area, typically divided into smaller regions called cells. Each cell is served by a base station, which is a piece of equipment that transmits and receives radio signals.

The core of a mobile network consists of a switching infrastructure that manages the connections between mobile devices and the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or the internet. When a mobile device makes a call or accesses data, the request is sent to the nearest base station. This base station then forwards the request to the mobile switching center, which routes the communication to its intended destination. As a user moves from one cell to another, the network seamlessly transfers the connection to the new base station without interruption.

Mobile networks have evolved through several generations, each bringing significant improvements in speed, capacity, and functionality. Early generations, like 1G, focused on analog voice calls. Subsequent generations, such as 2G (GSM), introduced digital voice and text messaging. 3G networks enabled mobile internet access and basic data services. 4G (LTE) dramatically increased data speeds, making mobile video streaming and more complex applications feasible. The current generation, 5G, offers even faster speeds, lower latency, and the ability to connect a much larger number of devices simultaneously, paving the way for new technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and advanced augmented reality.
