matalaviskositeettiset

Matalaviskositeettiset is a Finnish term used to describe substances that have low dynamic viscosity and therefore flow readily. The term is common in chemistry, materials science, coatings, inks, solvents, lubricants, and cosmetics to distinguish these materials from those with higher viscosity.

Viscosity is a measure of a fluid’s resistance to shear and flow. Dynamic viscosity, measured in millipascal-seconds (mPa·s), varies with temperature and shear conditions. In general, matalaviskositeettiset fluids have viscosities on the order of a few millipascal-seconds to tens or hundreds of millipascal-seconds at standard temperatures, though exact thresholds depend on the application and context.

Characteristics of low-viscosity materials include high flowability, good wetting, and easy spreading. Many of these fluids are Newtonian, exhibiting a constant viscosity independent of shear rate, while some are non-Newtonian and show shear-dependent behavior.

Measurement of viscosity is performed with viscometers, such as capillary or rotational instruments (for example Brookfield viscometers). Temperature has a strong effect: viscosity generally decreases as temperature rises, and the same material can shift category with temperature changes.

Applications rely on low viscosity to enable processes like spraying, coating, printing, infiltration, and efficient mixing. Factors influencing viscosity include molecular weight, molecular interactions, temperature, and, for polymers, concentration and solvent quality. Safety considerations are important, as many low-viscosity solvents are flammable or volatile, requiring proper ventilation and protective equipment. Examples range from water and ethanol to acetone and light mineral oils.
