A masterbatcher is a manufacturer or facility that produces masterbatch concentrates, which are highly concentrated mixtures of pigments, dyes, or additives dispersed in a polymer resin. Masterbatches are used to impart color or functional properties to plastics during processing, enabling consistent coloration and additive delivery across production lots.

Manufacturing typically involves compounding an additive with a carrier resin in a twin-screw extruder. The molten material is cooled, pelletized, and packaged. Carrier resins are chosen to be compatible with common base polymers and to optimize dispersion, with carriers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, EVA, or polystyrene.

Types include color masterbatches, which carry pigments or dyes, and additive masterbatches, which provide UV stabilizers, flame retardants, anti-static agents, antioxidants, processing aids, or fillers. Masterbatches find use in packaging, automotive components, consumer goods, medical devices, and construction materials.
