Masinas are traditional wooden boats originating from the Philippines, particularly in the Visayas region. They are renowned for their distinctive design, which features a single, outrigger-like float attached to one side of the hull. This outrigger stabilizes the boat, allowing it to navigate open waters with greater ease and balance compared to conventional canoes or boats without such support.

The construction of a masina typically involves a hollowed-out log or a plank-built hull, reinforced with bamboo or other lightweight materials. The outrigger, known as the tulay, is often made from a separate piece of wood or bamboo and is secured to the main hull with lashing techniques. Traditional masinas are usually propelled by paddles, though some modern versions may use motors for propulsion.

Masinas have historically played a crucial role in Filipino maritime culture, serving as essential tools for fishing, transportation, and trade. They are also featured in local festivals, such as the Ati-Atihan in Aklan, where they are showcased as part of the vibrant celebrations. The craftsmanship involved in building a masina reflects the skill and heritage of Filipino boat builders, known as kalesa or sukal.

While traditional masinas remain in use, contemporary versions have evolved to incorporate materials like fiberglass and synthetic fibers, improving durability and performance.
