Marknadssystem, or market system, refers to the set of institutions and rules that structure how markets allocate resources in an economy. Central to it are private property, voluntary exchange, the price mechanism, competition, and the legal framework for contracts and enforcement.

Core components include well-defined property rights, voluntary exchange, prices as signals, competitive markets, reliable information, and an institutional framework—courts, regulators, and financial institutions—that enforces contracts and warranties.

Prices adjust to changes in supply and demand, allocating resources efficiently and encouraging investments where marginal benefits exceed costs. Consumers express preferences through purchasing choices, while producers respond with supply decisions.

Government plays a key role within a market system. While market mechanisms coordinate many transactions, governments define and protect property rights, enforce contracts, regulate monopolies and externalities, provide public goods, and stabilize the economy through fiscal and monetary policy.

Most modern economies are mixed, combining market-based allocation with state intervention. Some systems emphasize social welfare and universal services (social market economies), while others lean toward liberal free-market models.
