They are caused by the mite *Sarcoptes scabiei*, which burrows into the skin, leading to intense itching, inflammation, and hair loss. The condition is highly contagious and can spread rapidly among animals in close contact, though it is not typically transmitted to humans.

Symptoms of mange in animals often include excessive scratching, redness, crusty skin, and patchy hair loss, particularly around the ears, elbows, and legs. In severe cases, secondary bacterial infections may develop due to the animal’s weakened skin barrier. Diagnosis is usually confirmed through skin scrapings examined under a microscope to identify the mites or their eggs.

Treatment typically involves topical or oral antiparasitic medications prescribed by a veterinarian. Common options include ivermectin, milbemycin, or selamectin, often combined with supportive care such as antihistamines or antibiotics if infection is present. Environmental hygiene, such as frequent cleaning of bedding and disinfecting surfaces, helps prevent reinfestation.

Prevention focuses on regular flea and tick control, as mange mites can thrive in environments where other parasites are present. Vaccines are not available for mange, but maintaining overall animal health through proper nutrition and veterinary care can reduce susceptibility.
