In the in-world setting, magvai forms in deep-seated basaltic magmatic systems and is mined primarily in the eastern uplands of the continent of Valora. The term is drawn from the Magvai language, where mag means fire and vai means stone, and it first appears in medieval-era chronicles of the region.

Magvai crystals are described as dense, dark with an iridescent sheen that shifts hue under different lighting. In-universe shorthand, it is treated as an iron-magnesium silicate with trace vanadium. Reported hardness is in the 6–7 Mohs range, and it is said to conduct heat efficiently, lending itself to high-temperature applications. When alloyed with nickel and other elements, magvai yields a durable material for tools and industrial components.
