Magnókban is a term that refers to recordings made on magnetic tape. This technology was prevalent for audio and video storage from the mid-20th century until the widespread adoption of digital formats. Magnetic tape consists of a plastic ribbon coated with a magnetic material. When audio or video signals are passed through a recording head, they alter the magnetic orientation of the particles on the tape, effectively storing the information. Playback is achieved by passing the tape over a playback head, which detects the variations in magnetic field and converts them back into electrical signals.

Different types of magnókban exist, including reel-to-reel tapes, cassette tapes, and 8-track cartridges. Reel-to-reel tapes were common in professional studios and for archiving, offering high fidelity but requiring specialized equipment. Cassette tapes became ubiquitous for personal use, offering portability and ease of handling, while 8-track cartridges were popular in the automotive industry for a period. The quality of magnókban could degrade over time due to factors like physical wear, environmental conditions, and magnetic degradation. Despite their obsolescence, many historical recordings and personal archives still exist on magnetic tape, leading to ongoing efforts in tape restoration and digitization.
