Magnetpidurites, often translated as magnetic brakes or eddy current brakes, are devices that utilize electromagnetic forces to slow down or stop motion. Unlike friction brakes that rely on material surfaces rubbing against each other, magnetpidurites operate without direct physical contact. This contactless operation leads to several advantages, including reduced wear and tear, a longer lifespan, and consistent braking performance even under harsh conditions.

The fundamental principle behind magnetpidurites involves inducing eddy currents within a conductive material, typically a metal rotor or disc, by passing a magnetic field across it. As the rotor moves through the magnetic field, or as the magnetic field changes relative to the rotor, electrical currents are generated within the rotor itself. These eddy currents, in turn, create their own magnetic fields that oppose the original magnetic field that generated them. This opposing force, according to Lenz's Law, results in a braking torque that resists the motion.

The strength of the braking effect can be controlled by varying the intensity of the magnetic field. This is often achieved by adjusting the current supplied to electromagnets. Permanent magnets can also be used, providing a fixed braking force.
