Magnetosfäärile is the term used in Finnish to refer to a planet's magnetosphere. A magnetosphere is the region of space surrounding a planet that is significantly affected by its magnetic field. This magnetic field is generated by the motion of electrically conductive material within the planet's core, creating a dynamo effect. The magnetosphere acts as a protective shield, deflecting most of the charged particles that stream from the Sun in the form of the solar wind.

The shape and size of a magnetosphere are determined by the strength of the planet's magnetic field and the pressure of the solar wind. For Earth, the magnetosphere is compressed on the sunward side and stretches out into a long tail on the opposite side, known as the magnetotail. Within the magnetosphere, charged particles can become trapped, forming radiation belts. These trapped particles can interact with the atmosphere, causing phenomena like auroras. The magnetosphere also plays a role in space weather, influencing the behavior of satellites and communication systems. Planets with weak or no magnetic fields, like Mars, have much less protection from the solar wind, leading to atmospheric erosion over time.
