Magnetistness is a term used to describe the inherent property of certain materials to exhibit magnetic effects. These effects include the ability to attract or repel other magnetic materials, and to induce magnetism in nearby ferromagnetic substances. The strength and nature of magnetistness vary greatly among different materials.

Materials possessing magnetistness are broadly categorized into magnetic, paramagnetic, and diamagnetic substances. Magnetic materials, often referred to as ferromagnetic, display a strong and permanent magnetistness. This is due to the alignment of their atomic magnetic moments, which creates a net magnetic field. Examples include iron, nickel, and cobalt. Paramagnetic materials exhibit a weak attraction to magnetic fields, and their magnetistness is temporary, disappearing when the external field is removed. Examples include aluminum and platinum. Diamagnetic materials, on the other hand, are weakly repelled by magnetic fields, and their magnetistness is also temporary. Examples include copper and bismuth.

In materials with magnetistness, the collective behavior of these electron spins dictates the overall magnetic properties.
