Magnetiseerumist refers to the process by which a material becomes magnetized. This occurs when the magnetic domains within a substance align themselves in a particular direction. Magnetic domains are small regions within ferromagnetic materials where the magnetic moments of the atoms are aligned. In an unmagnetized state, these domains are randomly oriented, resulting in no net magnetic field.

When a ferromagnetic material is exposed to an external magnetic field, the magnetic domains begin to rotate and align with the direction of the applied field. If the external field is strong enough and the material is suitable, this alignment can become permanent, even after the external field is removed. This permanent alignment is what constitutes a magnetized material, often referred to as a permanent magnet.

The process of magnetisation can be achieved through various methods. One common method is to place the material in a strong magnetic field, such as that produced by a solenoid. Stroking a ferromagnetic material repeatedly in one direction with a strong magnet can also induce magnetisation. The effectiveness of magnetisation depends on the material's magnetic properties, such as its coercivity and retentivity, which determine how easily it can be magnetized and how well it retains its magnetism. Demagnetisation, the opposite process, involves randomizing these magnetic domains, effectively removing the material's magnetism.
