Magnetiittisten is a Finnish term used to describe rocks or mineral assemblages that contain significant amounts of magnetite (chemical formula Fe3O4). The adjective form derives from magnetiitti, the mineral magnetite, and is frequently used in geology to specify magnetite-rich or magnetite-bearing materials.

Magnetite is an iron oxide mineral with ferrimagnetic properties, a metallic luster, and a black to dark brown appearance. It crystallizes in the inverse spinel structure and is stable over a wide range of geological conditions. Its magnetic character makes magnetite an important mineral for both scientific study and practical applications, including magnetic surveying and ore exploration.

Magnetiittisten rocks occur in a variety of geological settings. They can be primary magmatic magnetite crystallizing in mafic and ultramafic rocks such as basalt, gabbro, and peridotite, or they may form through hydrothermal and metasomatic processes. Magnetite is also a common constituent in metamorphic rocks, and in sedimentary settings it appears as a major component of banded iron formations and iron-rich sandstones. In many cases magnetite occurs as discrete grains, along exsolution patterns with other oxides, or as disseminated, opaque grains distributed through the rock matrix.

The presence of magnetiittisten features can influence the physical properties of rocks, including density and magnetic susceptibility, and it has practical importance in iron ore mining and geophysical prospecting. In paleomagnetism and tectonics, magnetite-bearing rocks preserve records of the Earth's magnetic field, contributing to reconstructions of ancient geodynamos and plate movements.
