Magneettisiterä is a Finnish term that translates to "magnetic strip" or "magnetic tape." In a technological context, it most commonly refers to a data storage medium consisting of a plastic film or other substrate coated with a magnetic material. This magnetic coating allows data to be encoded, stored, and retrieved by magnetic heads.

Historically, magneettisiterä was a dominant form of data storage for both audio and visual information, as well as computer data. Examples include audio cassette tapes, VHS tapes, and various forms of magnetic tape used in early computers and for backup purposes. The data is stored in binary form, representing 0s and 1s, through the magnetization of tiny particles on the tape's surface.

While advancements in digital storage technologies like hard drives, solid-state drives, and cloud storage have largely superseded magnetic tape for many applications, magneettisiterä still finds use in specific niche areas. These include long-term archival storage due to its relatively low cost and durability over extended periods, as well as in certain industrial and scientific applications where high data volumes need to be stored offline. The read/write process involves a magnetic head passing over the tape, altering the magnetic orientation of particles or detecting their existing orientation.
