Magmaerilaistuminen, often translated as magma differentiation or magma evolution, is a fundamental geological process describing the changes in the composition of a magma as it cools and crystallizes. Magma, molten rock found beneath the Earth's surface, contains a variety of elements and compounds. As it cools, different minerals begin to crystallize at specific temperature ranges.

The most common process driving magmaerilaistuminen is fractional crystallization. During this process, as the magma cools, minerals with higher melting points, such as olivine and pyroxene, crystallize first and settle out of the remaining liquid magma, often due to gravity. For example, a mafic magma, initially rich in iron and magnesium, can evolve into a more felsic magma, rich in silica and feldspar, through extensive fractional crystallization. Other processes like magma mixing, where two magmas of different compositions combine, and assimilation, where the magma melts and incorporates surrounding country rock, also contribute to magmaerilaistuminen and the diversity of igneous rocks observed on Earth. Understanding magmaerilaistuminen is crucial for interpreting the origin and evolution of volcanic rocks and the processes occurring within the Earth's mantle and crust.
