Magasságreferencia, often translated as height reference or elevation datum, is a fundamental concept in surveying, cartography, and geodesy. It establishes a zero point from which all other elevations are measured. Without a standardized reference, it would be impossible to accurately compare heights of different locations or to create consistent maps.

There are various types of magasságreferencia. The most common are vertical datums, which are based on mean sea level. However, mean sea level itself is not static and can fluctuate due to tidal effects, ocean currents, and long-term climate changes. Therefore, precise vertical datums are often defined through complex geodetic surveys and can vary significantly between different regions or countries. For example, the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) and the European Vertical Reference System (EVRS) are distinct datums with different zero points.

In some applications, local or temporary datums might be used. These are established for specific projects or areas and are not intended for widespread use. The choice of magasságreferencia is crucial for the accuracy and reliability of any geodetic or mapping endeavor. GPS systems, for instance, typically provide elevations relative to an ellipsoid, which is a mathematical model of the Earth. This ellipsoidal height then needs to be transformed into a height referenced to a geoid, which approximates mean sea level, for practical use in navigation and land management.
