Macadamized refers to a method of road construction that uses a durable, gravel-based surface layer to create a stable and long-lasting pavement. The technique was developed in the early 19th century by Scottish engineer John Loudon McAdam, after whom it is named. Macadamized roads are characterized by their use of compacted layers of crushed stone, which interlock to distribute weight and resist deformation from traffic.

The process begins with a solid foundation, often consisting of compacted subgrade soil or a layer of coarse gravel. Over this, multiple layers of progressively finer crushed stone are laid and rolled to achieve maximum density. The top layer typically consists of smaller stones, sometimes mixed with a binder like tar or asphalt in later adaptations, to enhance durability and reduce dust. This design allows water to drain through the layers, preventing pooling and weakening of the road surface.

Macadamized roads were revolutionary for their time, offering a more resilient alternative to traditional cobblestone or dirt paths. They reduced maintenance needs and improved travel conditions, making them widely adopted in the 19th and early 20th centuries. While modern asphalt and concrete pavements have largely replaced macadamized roads in many regions, the principles of layering and compaction remain foundational in contemporary road construction. The method is still used in some rural or low-traffic areas where cost-effectiveness and simplicity are priorities.
