Maalityyppi is a Finnish term that translates roughly to paint type or coating type. In Finnish technical and trade literature, maalityyppi refers to a category of coatings defined by its binder system, vehicle, drying mechanism, and intended use. The genitive form maalityypin is used in contexts such as product specifications or material safety data sheets to indicate “of the paint type.”

Coatings are commonly classified by binder, such as acrylic, alkyd, epoxy, polyurethane, oil, or vinyl; by base or solvent system, including water-based and solvent-based; by finish (matte, satin, semi-gloss, gloss); and by application area or substrate (interior, exterior, wood, metal, concrete).
