Målvariabler, often translated as target variables or outcome variables, are central to research and analysis. In essence, a målvariabel is the primary factor or outcome that a study or experiment aims to measure, predict, or influence. It represents what is being investigated. For example, in a study examining the effectiveness of a new teaching method, the improvement in student test scores would be the målvariabel.

The identification of appropriate målvariabler is a critical step in the design of any research project. It dictates the type of data to be collected and the analytical methods to be employed. Målvariabler can be quantitative, meaning they can be expressed numerically, such as revenue, temperature, or lifespan. Alternatively, they can be qualitative, representing categories or attributes, like customer satisfaction levels (e.g., satisfied, neutral, dissatisfied) or disease presence (yes/no).

In statistical modeling and machine learning, the målvariabel is also known as the dependent variable or response variable.
