A wet-bulb thermometer is a device used to measure the wet-bulb temperature. The wet-bulb temperature is the lowest temperature to which air can be cooled by the evaporation of water into that air at a constant pressure. It is essentially the temperature reading of a thermometer that is wrapped in a water-soaked cloth through which air is passed. As the water evaporates, it cools the thermometer bulb. The rate of evaporation, and therefore the cooling effect, depends on the humidity of the air. In dry air, evaporation is rapid, and the wet-bulb temperature will be significantly lower than the dry-bulb temperature. In saturated air (100% humidity), there is no evaporation, and the wet-bulb temperature will be the same as the dry-bulb temperature.

Wet-bulb thermometers are often used in conjunction with dry-bulb thermometers to determine relative humidity. By comparing the readings of the two thermometers, one can consult a psychrometric chart or use a formula to calculate the relative humidity and dew point of the air.
