Løsningsekstraksjon, also known as solvent extraction or liquid-liquid extraction, is a separation technique used to isolate or purify a compound from a mixture based on differences in solubility. This process involves using a solvent to selectively dissolve one or more components of a mixture, separating them from the remaining components. The key principle is that different substances will have varying affinities for different solvents.

Typically, løsningsekstraksjon is performed by bringing two immiscible liquid phases into contact. One phase is the original mixture, and the other is an immiscible solvent chosen for its ability to dissolve the desired component. When the two phases are mixed, the target compound will transfer from its original phase into the solvent phase, moving towards equilibrium. After sufficient contact time, the two phases are allowed to separate, usually due to density differences, resulting in two distinct layers. The layer containing the extracted component is then collected.

This technique finds wide application in various fields, including chemistry, pharmaceuticals, mining, and environmental science. For example, it's used to extract valuable metals from ore leachates, to purify active pharmaceutical ingredients, or to remove pollutants from water. The choice of solvent is critical and depends on factors such as the polarity of the solute, its solubility, and the immiscibility with the original phase. Multiple extraction steps can be employed to increase the efficiency of the separation.
