Løfteflate, often translated as "lifting surface" or "wing" in English, refers to a surface designed to generate an upward force when moved through a fluid, typically air or water. This force, known as lift, is the principle behind flight for aircraft and the propulsion of many watercraft.

The design of a løfteflate is crucial for its efficiency. Common shapes include airfoils, which are curved on top and flatter on the bottom. As air moves faster over the curved upper surface than the flatter lower surface, the pressure above the løfteflate becomes lower than the pressure below it. This pressure difference creates an upward force, the lift. Similarly, hydrofoils in water operate on the same principle, but with water as the fluid medium.

The size, shape, angle of attack (the angle between the løfteflate and the direction of the fluid flow), and speed of movement all influence the amount of lift generated. Løfteflater are fundamental components in the design of airplanes, helicopters, gliders, and some types of boats and submarines. Their aerodynamic or hydrodynamic properties are carefully engineered to achieve desired performance characteristics.
