Lääkekemia, often translated as medicinal chemistry, is a multidisciplinary science that involves the design, synthesis, and development of pharmaceutical agents. It sits at the intersection of chemistry, biology, and pharmacology, aiming to discover and optimize new drug molecules for therapeutic use. Medicinal chemists work to understand the relationship between a drug's chemical structure and its biological activity, a concept known as structure-activity relationship (SAR).

The process typically begins with identifying a biological target, such as a protein or enzyme, that is involved in a disease process. Researchers then design molecules that can interact with this target to produce a beneficial effect, for example, by inhibiting an enzyme's activity or activating a receptor. This involves synthesizing numerous candidate compounds and testing their efficacy and safety in laboratory experiments and preclinical studies.

Key areas within lääkekemia include drug discovery, where novel chemical entities are sought; lead optimization, where promising compounds are refined to improve their properties; and drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK), which examines how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and excretes a drug. Lääkekemia plays a crucial role in bringing new medicines from the laboratory bench to the patient's bedside, addressing unmet medical needs across a wide range of diseases.
