Lappkameradefekter, a term derived from Swedish, refers to a phenomenon where a camera intended for close-up photography or videography exhibits unexpected or undesirable visual distortions when capturing images of objects at very close distances. These defects can manifest in various ways, impacting the quality and usability of the captured media.

Common läppkameradefekter include severe chromatic aberration, where different colors do not align correctly, leading to colored fringes around objects. Barrel distortion, a type of geometric distortion, can also occur, making straight lines appear to bow outwards from the center of the image. Conversely, pincushion distortion might cause lines to bend inwards. Another significant issue is a drastic reduction in sharpness and detail, often accompanied by increased noise, as the lens struggles to maintain focus and capture fine textures at such proximity. Vignetting, where the edges of the image are darker than the center, can also be exacerbated.

These defects arise because lenses are typically optimized for a specific range of focal distances. When pushed beyond their intended close-focus capabilities, their optical properties can degrade significantly. While some cameras are designed for macro photography and are engineered to minimize these issues, standard cameras or even those with "macro modes" may still exhibit läppkameradefekter when attempting extreme close-ups.
