Lämpöverkostoissa, often translated as district heating networks, are systems that deliver heat from a central source to multiple buildings. These networks are common in many urban and densely populated areas, particularly in colder climates. The central heat source can be a variety of options, including combined heat and power (CHP) plants that generate electricity and heat simultaneously, industrial waste heat, geothermal energy, biomass, or even large-scale heat pumps.

The heat is typically distributed through a network of insulated underground pipes. Hot water or steam flows through the supply pipes to individual buildings. Within each building, a heat exchanger transfers the heat from the district heating network's water to the building's internal heating system, such as radiators or underfloor heating, and for domestic hot water. The cooled water then returns to the central plant through a separate return pipe to be reheated.

The primary advantage of lämpöverkostoissa is their efficiency and potential for environmental benefits. By centralizing heat production, it is often easier to implement advanced, more efficient, and cleaner technologies compared to individual heating systems in each building. This can lead to reduced emissions, especially when the heat source utilizes renewable or waste energy. However, the initial investment for establishing a district heating network can be substantial, and the benefits are most pronounced in areas with high heat demand density.
