Lämpötilaväline refers to a tool or device used for measuring temperature. These instruments are essential in a wide range of applications, from scientific research and industrial processes to everyday weather forecasting and medical diagnostics. The fundamental principle behind most lämpötilaväline is the detection of a physical property that changes predictably with temperature.

Common types of lämpötilaväline include thermometers. Traditional liquid-in-glass thermometers utilize the thermal expansion of a liquid, such as mercury or alcohol, within a calibrated tube. As temperature increases, the liquid expands and rises in the tube, indicating the temperature on a marked scale. Bimetallic thermometers work on the principle of differential thermal expansion between two different metals bonded together. When heated, the metals expand at different rates, causing the strip to bend and move a pointer to indicate the temperature.

Electronic lämpötilaväline are increasingly prevalent. Resistance thermometers, like Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) and thermistors, rely on the change in electrical resistance of a material with temperature. Thermocouples generate a voltage that is proportional to the temperature difference between two dissimilar metal junctions. Infrared thermometers, or pyrometers, measure the thermal radiation emitted by an object, allowing for non-contact temperature measurements.
