Lämpötilarele, often translated as temperature relay or thermal switch, is a control device that activates or deactivates an electrical circuit based on a specific temperature threshold. It operates by using a temperature-sensitive element, such as a bimetallic strip, thermistor, or gas-filled bellows, which changes its physical properties in response to temperature fluctuations. When the ambient temperature reaches a predetermined point, the sensitive element undergoes a change, causing a mechanical action that either opens or closes electrical contacts. This, in turn, controls the flow of electricity to another device.

There are two primary types of lämpötilarele: normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC). A normally open type will close its contacts when the set temperature is reached, allowing current to flow. Conversely, a normally closed type will open its contacts, interrupting the circuit, when the temperature threshold is met. These devices are commonly found in various applications to protect equipment from overheating, regulate heating or cooling systems, and ensure safe operating temperatures for machinery and electronics. Their simplicity, reliability, and cost-effectiveness make them a widely adopted solution for temperature-dependent control.
