Lämpötilarakenne refers to the vertical distribution of temperature within a body of water or the atmosphere. In bodies of water, such as oceans, lakes, and rivers, the temperature structure is influenced by factors like solar radiation, heat exchange with the atmosphere, and water movement. Typically, warmer water is found at the surface due to solar heating and mixing by wind, while colder water is found at greater depths. This stratification can create distinct layers. The epilimnion is the uppermost, well-mixed, and warmer layer. Below this is the thermocline, a transition zone where temperature decreases rapidly with depth. The hypolimnion is the lowest, coldest, and often undisturbed layer.

In the atmosphere, temperature structure also varies with altitude. The troposphere, the lowest layer where weather occurs, generally shows a decrease in temperature with increasing height. Above the troposphere is the stratosphere, where temperature increases with altitude due to the absorption of ultraviolet radiation by ozone. Further layers include the mesosphere, where temperature decreases again, and the thermosphere, where temperatures rise significantly due to absorption of high-energy solar radiation. Understanding temperature structure is crucial for various scientific disciplines, including oceanography, meteorology, climate science, and environmental studies, as it affects water density, circulation patterns, marine life, and weather phenomena.
