Lämpöruiskutus, known in English as thermal spraying, is a group of coating processes in which finely divided metallic or non-metallic materials are deposited in a molten or semi-molten state onto a surface. The particles are heated by a thermal source, such as a combustion flame, electric arc, or plasma jet, and then propelled by a gas stream towards the substrate. Upon impact, the particles flatten, cool rapidly, and inter-layer to form a cohesive coating.

The primary goal of thermal spraying is to impart specific properties to the substrate surface that it does not possess in its bulk form. These properties can include wear resistance, corrosion resistance, thermal insulation, electrical conductivity, or restoration of worn or damaged components. The wide range of materials that can be applied, from metals and alloys to ceramics and polymers, makes thermal spraying a versatile technology for various industries, including aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing.

Different thermal spraying techniques exist, each with its own advantages and applications. Common methods include flame spraying, arc spraying, plasma spraying, and high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying. The choice of method depends on factors such as the material to be sprayed, the desired coating properties, and the substrate material. The process typically involves surface preparation of the substrate to ensure good adhesion, followed by the spraying operation and sometimes post-coating treatments.
