Lämpönvaihtimet, or heat exchangers in English, are devices designed to efficiently transfer thermal energy from one medium to another. These mediums can be liquids, gases, or a combination of both, and they are separated by a solid barrier, preventing direct mixing. The primary function of a heat exchanger is to heat a cooler fluid by transferring heat from a hotter fluid, or vice versa. This process is fundamental in numerous industrial and domestic applications.

The design of a heat exchanger depends heavily on the specific application and the properties of the fluids involved. Common types include shell and tube exchangers, where one fluid flows through a bundle of tubes and another fluid flows around these tubes within a shell. Plate heat exchangers consist of a series of thin metal plates stacked together, with channels formed between them for the fluids to flow through. Other designs include finned tube exchangers, which increase the surface area for heat transfer, and regenerative exchangers, which store heat in a material and then release it to another fluid.

Heat exchangers play a crucial role in systems such as power generation, refrigeration, air conditioning, automotive engines (radiators), and chemical processing. They are essential for optimizing energy efficiency by recovering waste heat that would otherwise be lost, thereby reducing operational costs and environmental impact. The effectiveness of a heat exchanger is measured by its thermal efficiency, which is influenced by factors like the surface area, the materials used, the flow rates of the fluids, and the temperature difference between them.
