Lämpöeristeet, known in English as thermal insulation, are materials used to reduce the transfer of heat. Their primary function is to slow down the rate at which heat flows from a warmer area to a cooler area. This is crucial in many applications, including buildings, industrial processes, and the transportation of goods.

The effectiveness of a thermal insulator is measured by its thermal conductivity, often denoted by the symbol 'k'. Materials with low thermal conductivity are good insulators, meaning they resist heat flow. Conversely, materials with high thermal conductivity are good conductors of heat.

Common thermal insulating materials include fiberglass, mineral wool, polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam, and various natural materials like cork and cellulose. These materials often work by trapping air or other gases in small pockets. Since gases are poor conductors of heat, this trapped air significantly reduces heat transfer. The structure of the material also plays a role; for example, fibrous materials create a tortuous path for heat to travel.

In buildings, thermal insulation is installed in walls, roofs, and floors to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures, reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling, and prevent condensation. In industrial settings, insulation is used to keep processes at optimal temperatures, conserve energy, and protect equipment and personnel. The choice of insulation material depends on factors such as the required R-value (a measure of thermal resistance), cost, fire resistance, moisture resistance, and environmental impact.
