Lämmönsiirtolaitteilla, commonly known as heat exchangers, are devices designed to efficiently transfer thermal energy between two or more fluids that are at different temperatures. These fluids may be separated by a solid wall, preventing them from mixing, or they could be in direct contact. The primary purpose of a heat exchanger is to either heat up a cooler fluid by transferring heat from a hotter fluid or to cool down a hotter fluid by transferring heat to a cooler fluid.

The fundamental principle behind their operation is the second law of thermodynamics, which dictates that heat naturally flows from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature. Heat exchangers maximize this natural process by providing a large surface area across which heat can be transferred. The efficiency of a heat exchanger is influenced by factors such as the temperature difference between the fluids, the surface area for heat transfer, the material properties of the separating wall (if any), and the flow rates of the fluids.

Heat exchangers are ubiquitous in numerous industrial and domestic applications. They are essential components in power plants, where they are used for steam generation and cooling. In the automotive industry, radiators are a common example of a heat exchanger used to cool engine coolant. Refrigeration and air conditioning systems rely heavily on heat exchangers to move heat from one location to another. They are also found in chemical processing, food and beverage production, and even in everyday appliances like boilers and water heaters. Various designs exist, including shell-and-tube, plate, and finned-tube heat exchangers, each suited to different operational requirements and fluid types.
