A lämmönjohtaja, or heat conductor, is a material that readily transfers thermal energy. This property is crucial in many applications, from everyday household items to industrial processes. Materials with high thermal conductivity are considered good lämmönjohtajat.

Metals are excellent examples of lämmönjohtajat. Copper, aluminum, and silver, for instance, are commonly used in cookware, heat sinks for electronics, and in the construction of radiators. Their atomic structure allows for efficient vibration transfer, which is the mechanism of heat conduction.

Conversely, materials that resist the flow of heat are called thermal insulators. Examples include wood, plastic, and various forms of foam. These are used to prevent heat loss or gain, such as in building insulation, oven mitts, and thermal clothing. The effectiveness of a lämmönjohtaja is quantified by its thermal conductivity, a physical property measured in watts per meter-kelvin (W/(m·K)). A higher value indicates better heat conduction.
