lähettiRNAihin, also known as messenger RNA (mRNA), is a single-stranded RNA molecule that plays a crucial role in protein synthesis. It acts as an intermediary between deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribosomes, carrying genetic information transcribed from DNA to the ribosomes where it is translated into proteins. The process of creating mRNA from a DNA template is called transcription.

mRNA molecules are synthesized in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells and then transported to the cytoplasm. There, they bind to ribosomes, which are the cellular machinery responsible for protein production. The sequence of nucleotides in the mRNA molecule dictates the order of amino acids that will be assembled into a specific protein. This sequence is read in three-nucleotide units called codons, each corresponding to a particular amino acid or a stop signal.

The structure of mRNA differs from DNA in several ways. It is typically single-stranded, contains uracil (U) instead of thymine (T), and has a ribose sugar instead of deoxyribose. In eukaryotes, mRNA undergoes processing before it leaves the nucleus, including capping at the 5' end and the addition of a poly-A tail at the 3' end, which help stabilize the molecule and facilitate its translation. mRNA molecules are generally short-lived within the cell, their degradation being a regulated process that controls protein synthesis.
