Lungcirculatio is a broad term encompassing the movement of blood through the lungs. This process is essential for gas exchange, where carbon dioxide is removed from the blood and oxygen is absorbed. The primary component of lung circulation is the pulmonary circulation, a low-pressure system that carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs and returns oxygenated blood to the left atrium.

The pulmonary artery, originating from the right ventricle, branches into smaller arteries and arterioles, which eventually lead to the pulmonary capillaries. These capillaries are intimately associated with the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs. Here, diffusion occurs, allowing oxygen to pass from the inhaled air into the blood and carbon dioxide to move from the blood into the air to be exhaled.

From the capillaries, oxygenated blood flows into venules and then into larger pulmonary veins. These veins converge to form the pulmonary veins, which return the oxygen-rich blood to the left atrium of the heart, completing the pulmonary circuit.

While pulmonary circulation is the main pathway, other aspects of lung blood flow can be considered under the umbrella of lungcirculatio. These might include bronchial circulation, which supplies oxygenated blood to the lung tissue itself, and the lymphatic drainage of the lungs. The efficiency of lungcirculatio is critical for maintaining adequate oxygen levels in the body and removing metabolic waste products. Disruptions to this circulation can lead to various respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.
