Lung circulation refers to the process by which blood is transported to and from the lungs, facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. This process is a critical component of the cardiovascular system and is essential for maintaining life. The pulmonary circulation begins with deoxygenated blood returning from the body via the pulmonary veins and entering the left atrium of the heart. From there, it is pumped into the left ventricle, which then ejects the blood into the pulmonary arteries. The pulmonary arteries branch into smaller vessels that eventually reach the lung tissue, where the exchange of gases occurs.

In the lungs, oxygen from inhaled air diffuses into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, diffuses out of the blood and into the alveoli to be exhaled. This exchange takes place across the thin walls of the alveoli and the capillaries that surround them. After the exchange, the oxygenated blood is collected by the pulmonary veins and returns to the left atrium, completing the pulmonary circulation cycle.

The efficiency of lung circulation is influenced by several factors, including the structure of the lungs, the elasticity of the lung tissue, and the integrity of the respiratory muscles. Disorders affecting lung circulation can lead to conditions such as pulmonary hypertension, where increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries impairs blood flow to the lungs, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which reduces the efficiency of gas exchange in the lungs. Understanding lung circulation is crucial for diagnosing and treating respiratory conditions and for maintaining overall cardiovascular health.
