Luminescents are organisms that produce and emit light through a chemical reaction known as bioluminescence. This phenomenon is widespread in nature, particularly in marine environments, where it plays various roles in survival. The light is typically generated by a molecule called luciferin, which is oxidized in the presence of an enzyme called luciferase. This reaction releases energy in the form of light.

The functions of bioluminescence are diverse. It can be used for communication, such as attracting mates or signaling to other members of the same species. Predation is another common use, with some luminescent creatures using their light to lure prey, while others employ it for camouflage, breaking up their silhouette against the background light. Defense mechanisms also include bioluminescence, with some organisms flashing light to startle predators or using it to illuminate an escape route.

Common examples of luminescents include fireflies, some species of jellyfish, anglerfish, and certain bacteria and fungi. The specific colors of emitted light vary, ranging from blue and green, which are prevalent in the ocean where these colors travel farthest, to yellow and red. The study of luminescents, and bioluminescence in general, has practical applications in fields like medicine and biotechnology, where luminescent proteins are used as markers for tracking cellular processes.
