Luftdatenheten is a collaborative citizen science project that collects air quality data. It aims to provide fine-grained, real-time information on air pollution levels in various locations. The data collected by the Luftdatenheten network is made publicly available through an open data platform. The distributed nature of the sensor network provides a much denser coverage of air quality compared to traditional, sparser government monitoring stations. This density is particularly useful for identifying localized pollution hotspots.

The hardware is often based on readily available electronic components and open-source designs, making it accessible to a wide range of participants. Software for data transmission and visualization is also provided by the project.
