Luftavstånd refers to the horizontal distance between two points on the ground, measured as the straight-line distance through the air, rather than along the Earth's surface. This concept is commonly used in aviation, navigation, and geography to describe the shortest path between two locations when considering the three-dimensional space.

In aviation, luftavstånd is critical for flight planning, as pilots rely on it to calculate fuel requirements, flight times, and navigation routes. Unlike ground distance, which follows the curvature of the Earth, luftavstånd provides a more direct measurement that accounts for altitude. For example, two cities separated by a ground distance of 100 kilometers might have a luftavstånd of slightly less if one is at a higher elevation than the other.

The term is also relevant in surveying and geodesy, where precise measurements are needed for mapping and construction. By ignoring the Earth’s curvature and treating the surface as a flat plane, luftavstånd simplifies calculations for short distances. Luftavstånd is distinct from luftlinje, which refers to the straight-line path through the air between two points, including any vertical displacement. While luftavstånd is typically measured horizontally, luftlinje considers the full three-dimensional distance. In practical applications, such as air traffic control, luftavstånd is often used interchangeably with horizontal separation to avoid confusion with vertical or slant-range distances.
